Designer apparel has been a hot topic among women for quite some time. Many of us think that it's a complete waste of money and that owning such clothes is a blatant sign of vanity. To be frank, flaunting labels ostentatiously is something that each of us should avoid as it is a proof of bad taste and snobbery. But does it really mean that upmarket goods should stay off our radar?  Is there really nothing more behind the luxury logo? When is it worth spending more and when is it worth putting your money into something else?

– There is a lot of talk about the fact that shoes created by top designers are considerably different from the pairs that we can find in chain stores. Their production usually entails the use of the most delicate lambskin, the shoes are perfectly balanced (owing to which high heels don't slip off our feet and are extremely comfortable), each hem is executed with great attention to detail, and the shoes look simply beautiful on their owner's feet. However, there is one substantial disadvantage – they quickly wear out. Therefore, if you've already decided that you want to purchase your dream pair by Gianvinto Rossi, you need to be aware that you shouldn't wear these shoes to work on a daily basis. And if you're going to wear them on really rare occasions, you should choose a classic model. In such a way, you will avoid becoming fed up with them after two seasons. I advise against buying the lately popular designer sneakers and sports footwear – these will soon go out of fashion – and wear out equally quickly. If you are determined to buy designer shoes online, watch out for Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin – most of their models are really cut out and don't look good.

– Already in ancient times, the best craftsmen marked their products with their own unique sign. Owing to that, a potential buyer knew who was responsible for the execution and, thus, the quality of the item. Only hundreds of years later, when the companies began to use the blessings of marketing, did the discrepancy between the quality and the price appear and the brand name stop being a guarantee of the best fabrics. Today, there is no need for us to put much effort in gaining information whether the article of clothing that we want to buy was produced from the lowest quality resources and without respecting human rights. Producers in their assurances are almost balancing on the border of manipulation and until we read some kind of scandalous article online (about a rat sewn up in a dress, collapsed manufacturing plant, slavish work conditions, toxic dyes), we often remain oblivious about certain things.

– When we're talking about companies specialising in specific fields, it's worth investing in the label. It's better to buy running shoes in Nike or Adidas stores rather than in Zara, as the technological solutions of the former two will be more advanced. Such companies allocate greater financial outlays to make their products stand out quality-wise. The same can be said about skiing clothes and undergarments.

– I imagine that whenever you read an article on fashion websites about the fact that it's worth investing money in designer clothes, you usually roll your eyes and ponder whether the editors are aware of the meaning of the word "investment." In the light of article 3 section 1 item 17 of the Accounting Act, investment is the ownership of assets that are used to attain economic benefits resulting from the value increase of these assets. And it's rather unlikely that you'll sell your Jil Sander coat after three seasons for a price that is higher than its original price. Only in very specific cases (when it comes to limited editions or auctions) can we count on profit from the sale of used clothes and accessories. Yet, it's true that some elements of wardrobe can be sold at a small loss even after many years. Handbags are of course on the front line here. Then, we've got dresses, shoes, outerwear, trousers, sweaters, and, finally, undergarments.

Powyżej widzicie dwie torebki, pierwsza to YSL (kupiona w sklepie vintage), a druga to &Otherstories.

– Therefore, if you want to feel that you've got a chance to regain the bulk of the spent money, choose a handbag (highest prices are attained by models that can contain nothing more than your wallet, mobile phone, and keys; larger models that can contain A4 format are much harder to sell). It's important to keep the box, the dust bag, the receipt, and the authenticity card if the handbag comes with one. You're considering the purchase of a designer handbag? Check out the well-tried vintage shops (WhatGoesAround or Portero). Each handbag goes through an authenticity test, and your dream model can be found there even for half of its original price.

– You are already aware of the fact that designer clothes lose their value. It so happens, however, that most of us are willing to pay more to buy a… dress. Of course, I'm talking about a dress that you can wear for important events and that you will wear maximally up to three times a year. I'll stay persistent in encouraging you to buy classic models. However, if we want to go crazy with the dress, I'd go for renting one instead of buying one. Yes, I think that renting a dress is a better solution in some situations than going straight to the purchase. I took advantage of the Lovethedress offer, as I found a dress by Self-Portait that I really liked on their website. As it usually happens, I wouldn't wear it more than two times (it's too short for a wedding and is very characteristic). The store offers numerous examples of clothes from foreign and native designers.

– Jeśli więc chcesz mieć poczucie, że w przyszłości uda Ci się odzyskać lwią część wydanej kwoty, to wybierz torebkę (najwyższe ceny uzyskują te, do których zmieścisz niewiele poza portfelem, telefonem i kluczami, te duże, które mieszczą format A4 znacznie trudniej jest sprzedać). Ważne, aby zachować pudełko, worek, rachunek i kartę autentyczności jeśli torebka takową posiada.

– Even if you pay no attention whatsoever to the label and look at girls who save money to buy a Louis Vuitton bag for months with pity, you shouldn't be too much of an ignorant here. Higher price isn't always a guarantee of the fact that a given product is worth it, but an e x t r e m e l y low price in case of clothes and accessories should give us some food for thought. It's a really nice feeling when you come across a dress that costs PLN 30 in a chain store, but I, a person who has lately ventured into the world of clothing production, can immediately see the red signal in my head. If it's extremely difficult for me to negotiate PLN 60 for a simple dress in a Polish sewing workshop with quite a high number of orders (and I need to include the cost of the fabric, transportation, and packaging), then how is it possible for companies that sell their products at tenfold lower prices to save on anything? They surely save on everything apart from the margin. It's worth keeping that in mind and trying to become a mindful consumer.
