Dlaczego jesteśmy gotowe płacić za metkę? I kiedy warto to zrobić?

Designer apparel has been a hot topic among women for quite some time. Many of us think that it's a complete waste of money and that owning such clothes is a blatant sign of vanity. To be frank, flaunting labels ostentatiously is something that each of us should avoid as it is a proof of bad taste and snobbery. But does it really mean that upmarket goods should stay off our radar?  Is there really nothing more behind the luxury logo? When is it worth spending more and when is it worth putting your money into something else?

– There is a lot of talk about the fact that shoes created by top designers are considerably different from the pairs that we can find in chain stores. Their production usually entails the use of the most delicate lambskin, the shoes are perfectly balanced (owing to which high heels don't slip off our feet and are extremely comfortable), each hem is executed with great attention to detail, and the shoes look simply beautiful on their owner's feet. However, there is one substantial disadvantage – they quickly wear out. Therefore, if you've already decided that you want to purchase your dream pair by Gianvinto Rossi, you need to be aware that you shouldn't wear these shoes to work on a daily basis. And if you're going to wear them on really rare occasions, you should choose a classic model. In such a way, you will avoid becoming fed up with them after two seasons. I advise against buying the lately popular designer sneakers and sports footwear – these will soon go out of fashion – and wear out equally quickly. If you are determined to buy designer shoes online, watch out for Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin – most of their models are really cut out and don't look good.

– Already in ancient times, the best craftsmen marked their products with their own unique sign. Owing to that, a potential buyer knew who was responsible for the execution and, thus, the quality of the item. Only hundreds of years later, when the companies began to use the blessings of marketing, did the discrepancy between the quality and the price appear and the brand name stop being a guarantee of the best fabrics. Today, there is no need for us to put much effort in gaining information whether the article of clothing that we want to buy was produced from the lowest quality resources and without respecting human rights. Producers in their assurances are almost balancing on the border of manipulation and until we read some kind of scandalous article online (about a rat sewn up in a dress, collapsed manufacturing plant, slavish work conditions, toxic dyes), we often remain oblivious about certain things.

– When we're talking about companies specialising in specific fields, it's worth investing in the label. It's better to buy running shoes in Nike or Adidas stores rather than in Zara, as the technological solutions of the former two will be more advanced. Such companies allocate greater financial outlays to make their products stand out quality-wise. The same can be said about skiing clothes and undergarments.

– I imagine that whenever you read an article on fashion websites about the fact that it's worth investing money in designer clothes, you usually roll your eyes and ponder whether the editors are aware of the meaning of the word "investment." In the light of article 3 section 1 item 17 of the Accounting Act, investment is the ownership of assets that are used to attain economic benefits resulting from the value increase of these assets. And it's rather unlikely that you'll sell your Jil Sander coat after three seasons for a price that is higher than its original price. Only in very specific cases (when it comes to limited editions or auctions) can we count on profit from the sale of used clothes and accessories. Yet, it's true that some elements of wardrobe can be sold at a small loss even after many years. Handbags are of course on the front line here. Then, we've got dresses, shoes, outerwear, trousers, sweaters, and, finally, undergarments.

Powyżej widzicie dwie torebki, pierwsza to YSL (kupiona w sklepie vintage), a druga to &Otherstories.

– Therefore, if you want to feel that you've got a chance to regain the bulk of the spent money, choose a handbag (highest prices are attained by models that can contain nothing more than your wallet, mobile phone, and keys; larger models that can contain A4 format are much harder to sell). It's important to keep the box, the dust bag, the receipt, and the authenticity card if the handbag comes with one. You're considering the purchase of a designer handbag? Check out the well-tried vintage shops (WhatGoesAround or Portero). Each handbag goes through an authenticity test, and your dream model can be found there even for half of its original price.

– You are already aware of the fact that designer clothes lose their value. It so happens, however, that most of us are willing to pay more to buy a… dress. Of course, I'm talking about a dress that you can wear for important events and that you will wear maximally up to three times a year. I'll stay persistent in encouraging you to buy classic models. However, if we want to go crazy with the dress, I'd go for renting one instead of buying one. Yes, I think that renting a dress is a better solution in some situations than going straight to the purchase. I took advantage of the Lovethedress offer, as I found a dress by Self-Portait that I really liked on their website. As it usually happens, I wouldn't wear it more than two times (it's too short for a wedding and is very characteristic). The store offers numerous examples of clothes from foreign and native designers.

– Jeśli więc chcesz mieć poczucie, że w przyszłości uda Ci się odzyskać lwią część wydanej kwoty, to wybierz torebkę (najwyższe ceny uzyskują te, do których zmieścisz niewiele poza portfelem, telefonem i kluczami, te duże, które mieszczą format A4 znacznie trudniej jest sprzedać). Ważne, aby zachować pudełko, worek, rachunek i kartę autentyczności jeśli torebka takową posiada.

– Even if you pay no attention whatsoever to the label and look at girls who save money to buy a Louis Vuitton bag for months with pity, you shouldn't be too much of an ignorant here. Higher price isn't always a guarantee of the fact that a given product is worth it, but an e x t r e m e l y low price in case of clothes and accessories should give us some food for thought. It's a really nice feeling when you come across a dress that costs PLN 30 in a chain store, but I, a person who has lately ventured into the world of clothing production, can immediately see the red signal in my head. If it's extremely difficult for me to negotiate PLN 60 for a simple dress in a Polish sewing workshop with quite a high number of orders (and I need to include the cost of the fabric, transportation, and packaging), then how is it possible for companies that sell their products at tenfold lower prices to save on anything? They surely save on everything apart from the margin. It's worth keeping that in mind and trying to become a mindful consumer.

***

We frequently hear that we should benefit from care treatments on a regular basis and that our appearance is mostly influenced by the routine activities that we do on a daily basis. All right, but what if our skin and body don't look like we would want them to look and an important event is getting close? Are there any ways to hide our shortcomings – ways that will make us feel beautiful in only a few minutes?

***

– After each eyebrow shaping, the skin around our eyebrows is a little red and swollen. Thus, we shouldn't do that right before an important event. In reality, the fact that we haven't done it for the past month dawns at us r i g h t before the event. Ice cubes or camomile tea (green tea will be good as well) will come to your air. It's best to wrap the ice cubes in a piece of disposable paper or a tissue and delicately place them over the swollen area. If you've got camomile tea at home, brew a strong tea essence before the whole undertaking and immerse a few cotton pads in it. Then, place them in the refrigerator and get down to hair removal. When you finish, your compresses will be ready to use.

***

– If your face is tired and lacks lustre, you need to exfoliate your skin so that it regains at least a little bit of its vitality. The product that you use has to be well-tested because if it has particles that are too big, it might do you more harm than good. It's best to test the product already at the drug store. Apply a tiny drop of the cosmetic on the delicate area on your wrist and thoroughly massage it in. If you feel strong friction during this activity and your skin becomes red, the product isn't suitable for you. I enjoyed Yasumi rice face scrub – it has got a beautiful fragrance, delicate texture, and doesn't irritate the skin. I applied it even up to two times a week (this cosmetic line also features a face gel and face cream).

***

Z przyjemnością używam go nawet dwa razy w tygodniu (w tej serii znajdziesz też żel do mycia twarzy i krem).

– Another really great way to improve the appearance of your complexion is applying a face mask. Up to a certain point in the past, I had thought that such cosmetics are only advertising tricks (what's the point if there is no difference between a face cream and a face mask?), but I changed my mind – ten minutes with a face mask really gives results. Owing to such a mask, you can oxygenate, moisturise, brighten up, cleanse, and firm up your skin. You can even alleviate some irritations. The truth is that applying a mask literally takes a moment. While the mask is drying and releasing all its ingredients, you can prepare and iron your clothes. I use face masks from E-Naturalne.pl as their effects are quickly visible. I've got regenerating and protecting peel-off algae mask with wheat grass, spirulina, basil oil and cocoa beans as well as cleansing peel-off gel mask with activated carbon – it's pitch black but it's easy to apply it and take it off.

***

– If you want to hide fatigue and look fresh, avoid very strong make-up. Don't apply a heavy coat of powder and forget about strong eyes – the most important thing is to avoid applying liner under your eyes. You should rather choose highlighters instead of concealers. What's more, choose a foundation that will give you coverage but will, at the same time, remain light. When you're about to choose a new product, remember that cheaper ones are often very heavy and oily.

***

– You probably didn't have the time to sunbathe and you can't really show your impeccable suntan off. Don't worry, you're not the only person with such a problem. There are various cosmetics that will quickly give your skin a touch of sun-kissed colour. You need only a modicum to make your skin even up to a few tones darker. If you don't have any experience with such cosmetics, try to start with combining it with your body balm. You will achieve a great result with  Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Zero Tanlines. You apply it with a sponge; therefore, you can avoid dirty hands and, additionally, the product is waterproof. The packaging isn't really encouraging, but the product itself is really effective.

– If you want your body to look perfect, without even the tiniest imperfections, try body BB cream. You will find a number of such products on the market. Some of them aren't really worth the money that you have to pay for them. Recently, I was sponged off by a salesperson from a popular drugstore and, following her advice, I purchased Biotherm which was extremely expensive and didn't really bring any results. On the other hand, I was delighted with one of the products by Bielenda. However, for unclear reasons, the products has been withdrawn from the market, and its replacement (CC cream by Bielenda) is less effective in my opinion. Is there anything worth attention that you can recommend?

***

– Jeśli chcesz, aby twoje ciało wyglądało idealnie, bez najmniejszych niedoskonałości wypróbuj krem BB do ciała.

ONCE UPON A TIME – Gabrielle CHANEL

"I decided on what type of woman I would like to be. And I became her." These words were once uttered by Gabrielle Chanel – emancipated, strong, and ready for everything.

This year, CHANEL fashion house has decided to release two new products to praise the fashion designer of all time. A few months ago, the company presented a new handbag model and on the 1st of September, you will have the opportunity to buy the first pillar perfume (a product that is not a variation of another one that already exists) in fifteen years. Therefore, due to the premier of Gabrielle fragrance, I was invited to Paris – a city where everything connected with fashion and luxury started.

"Zadecydowałam jaką kobietą chcę być. I nią zostałam."

To właśnie w związku z premierą zapachu Gabrielle zostałam zaproszona do Paryża – miasta, w którym, jeśli mówimy o modzie i luksusie, wszystko się zaczęło.

Top5: Najlepsze stylizacje polskich blogerek z czerwca

Today, I decided to have a little sneak peak at the June outfits of our bloggers. Torrid days made us all dig in our wardrobes in search of sheer fabrics, light dresses, and shorts. The outfits wouldn't be complete without the latest fashion trends. The sets below might come in handy while completing your wardrobe for a holiday trip or sultry days in the city (which will hopefully come back).

***

Kapuczina

It's Kapuczina's first time in the ranking. Her set looks classic owing to the choice of a large black blazer. Yet, the outfit is far from being boring as the original accessories, such as a small handbag and block-heel booties attract attention.

MIEJSCE CZWARTE

Cajmel

The polka dot pattern on the dress and Karolina's subtle beauty make the whole outfit look girlish and fresh. I've got a similar dress myself, but I wouldn't combine it with such accessories. However, I really like the outcome. It's a great outfit for a walk around the scenic Wrocław.

MIEJSCE TRZECIE

JDFashionFreak

Third place goes to Dorota who opted for a simple linen dress. This fabric conjures up cuts that are far from being feminine, yet this model with a lower shoulder line and a belt to tie around the waistline looks extremely chic. As usual, you can also see stylish accessories, such as sunglasses, a straw hat, and slides.

MIEJSCE DRUGIE

Cammy

This month, Cammy is also on the top – I really appreciate her original style and beautiful photos. To my mind, her blog is top-notch and I think she will get far. Coming back to the outfit – a red dress and white booties are an original combination, but they look really encouraging in this case.

MIEJSCE PIERWSZE

Pattines

This month, first place goes to Patrycja. Her set is elegant, comfortable, and will be practical in hot weather. Apart from flats whose cut isn't really my cup of tea, I would eagerly steal the whole set.

Regardless of the number of adventures that I experience during my trips and no matter how much I enjoy discovering new places, coming back home is the best part of travelling. The safety that I feel whenever I step into my flat is irreplaceable.

If it happens that it's Friday and I know that I can lose my buzzing mobile phone somewhere in the folds of my duvet – there is little that I need to full happiness.

At weekends, I always spend a little bit more time on preparing my breakfast. I don't treat it as a meal, but as a wonderful ritual that should last as long as possible (as it is exactly the opposite during the week). I’m not really a fan of muesli from the store because there is always something that I don't like about it and, besides, it is rarely really gluten-free. Therefore, I've got one jar where I keep my favourite ingredients – after many attempts I see that this combination of products tastes the best.

I don't add dried fruit as they go bad quicker in comparison to "dry" ingredients and, secondly, there are so many wonderful products available in the stores now that it would be a sin to leave fresh apricot, currant, raspberries, and blueberries out. In low season I add some preserve. And maybe you are more into granola? Should I prepare a recipe for a gluten-free version for you?

***

GLUTEN-FREE MUESLI

1. two handfuls of hazelnuts (use a really top-quality product as those of poor quality will destroy the taste of the whole meal)

2. two handfuls of coconut shreds (I like them better than coconut flakes as they are sweeter)

3. two handfuls of buckwheat flakes (the only product that resembles the wheat one when it comes to its taste and appearance, besides these have a lot of fibre)

4. a handful of pecan nuts5. approximately

5. crumbled gluten-free biscuits (you will easily find them in supermarkets)

In a "lazy Sunday" version when you don't even want to put too much effort into the preparation, I combine natural yoghurt, apricots, and currants (it is important that at least one of the selected fruit has sour taste), and plenty of honey.

BEZGLUTENOWE MUSLI

1. dwie garści orzechów laskowych (niech będą naprawdę dobrej jakości, te kiepskie zniweczą smak całości)

2. dwie garści płatków kokosa (smakują mi bardziej niż wiórki, bo są słodsze)

3. dwie garści płatków gryczanych (jedyne płatki, które przypominają smakiem i wyglądem te pszenne, poza tym mają sporo błonnika)

4. garść orzechów pekan

My most faithful assistant and a fan of culinary photography. He never sniffs at any type of food.

Mój najwierniejszy asystent i pasjonat fotografii kulinarnej. Jemu zawsze wszystko smakuje.  The fact that I get the most rest when I sleep at home isn't probably thanks to the mattress, but the one that I've own surely facilitates the whole process. It was the last necessary item that I bought for my home and even though it wasn't that expensive, I'm really pleased with how it works. Mattress and pillows – Hilding (Rock&Roll model), sheets – Zara Home, silken pyjamas – MLE Collection (similar here).

On the shelves, there is a considerable stack of books waiting to be read – one or two more weeks and I will be able to get down to reading, I just need to finish working on a large project. I've already started one of the books – following the principle that the "I don't have time" excuse is inappropriate when it comes to reading. "The Underground Railroad"  by Colson Whitehead is a story about universal human needs that unified the black and the white in the fight for freedom, dignity, and human rights. The metaphorical dimension was deftly intertwined in the fate of the protagonist, Cora, who is searching for safe future. The eponymous railroad is, in fact, a code fragment that was used by the abolitionists who participated in the transit of slaves from the southern states of America. It is a moving story and, at the same time, one written out of concern for the most minute details. However, if you don't believe my assessment, maybe you will be convinced by the fact that Whitehead won the Pulitzer Prize for this book.

"Kolej podziemna. Czarna krew Ameryki" autorstwa Colsona Whitehead'a to powieść o uniwersalnych ludzkich potrzebach, które jednoczyły czarnych i białych w walce o wolność, godność i prawa człowieka.
