The times when I was platonically in love with actors and book protagonists are gone forever, but I still clearly remember my poster with Mulder from "The X-Files" hanging above my bed and how I shrieked with happiness when they announced "Lethal Weapon" or "Braveheart" with Mel Gibson on television (back then, young and without any moral scandals). Today, I no longer draw hearts on the photos from magazines, and the level of resemblance between Brad Pitt and a potential representative of the opposite sex ceased to be the main criterion when it comes to assessing attractiveness. However, I still sometimes experience temporary infatuations, when after watching a movie I start to frenetically search for other productions with the same leading actor, productions that are directed by the same person or, at least, that were created in the same period of time (even if the average grade on filmweb doesn't even exceed six points for some of these movies). That was the case with the detective stories of the 60s, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sean Connery, the works of Scorsese, Villeneuve, or Alan J. Pakula.
Approximately one year ago, I went to the cinema to see "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." about two spies during the times of the Cold War. It was light and pleasant, and my attention was mostly drawn by Alicia Vikander who had one of the leading roles in that movie. I really liked her natural charm, freshness, and girly looks. A couple of months later, a little bit out of lack of ideas for the evening, I watched "The Danish Girl," whose main asset was the acting of the talented Swedish woman. As it later turned out, I wasn't the only person who thought that. No more than a couple of weeks had passed and this beauty, who is one year younger than me, won an Oscar. The girl has a sharp eye for screenplays – I thought and decided to watch other productions with her hoping that I won't be disappointed. After "Testament of Youth", "Ex Machina," and the famous "A Royal Affair," released a couple of years ago, (unfortunately, I couldn't find it in a Polish version, only with English subtitles because it's a Danish production) I became a real fan of her talent.I was waiting for the subsequent movies just like children who are waiting for the first snowfall and, once in a while, I checked whether anything had been revealed about her consecutive professional choices. Therefore, I probably saw the trailer of "The Light Between Oceans" around ten minutes after it had been released, and I immediately decided that I would go to the cinema right after the premiere. Nay! I'd do more! I'd read the book that was the basis for the screenplay – since you need to be well-prepared and well-informer in the subject matter. Having familiarised myself with a short description of the book, I was a little bit discouraged as I don't really like melodramas – and the book really seemed to be corny. It has been read by more than two million people; therefore, there has to be something great about it – I was convincing myself, and I went to the bookshop with a pretended enthusiasm.
"The Light Between Oceans" by M. L. Stedman is a story of a young married couple who live on Janus Rock, an island located one hundred miles from the Australian coast. Tom Sherbourne, who is still not able to tackle his memories from the Great War, decides to take the post of a lighthouse keeper and, together with his beloved wife, starts a new chapter of life, away from home and the demons of the past. However, fate puts them to a tough test and forces them to make a choice that will change their lives forever. The story shows how difficult it sometimes is to distinguish between good and evil and how little it takes for good people to make bad decisions.
As I already mentioned above: I'm not keen on melodramas, but I wasn't bothered at all to cry buckets and wail under my breath once every ten pages – "oh, how he loves her!" or "forgive him, forgive him, don't be stupid!" and to pull up an all-nighter to read just one more chapter…or maybe four. To sum up, the book is really worth recommending, not only to Alicia's fans. And those who are interested in the adaptation can visit cinemas to see the movie already on the 18th of November.

Czasy, kiedy kochałam się platonicznie w aktorach i bohaterach książek minęły już bezpowrotnie, ale wciąż dobrze pamiętam plakat z Mulderem z „Archiwum X" nad moim łóżkiem i to, jak piszczałam ze szczęścia, gdy w telewizji zapowiadano „Zabójczą broń" lub „Braveheart" z Melem Gibsonem (wtedy jeszcze młodym i bez skandali obyczajowych na koncie). Dziś nie rysuję już serduszek na zdjęciach z gazety, a stopień podobieństwa do Brada Pitta przestał być głównym kryterium przy ocenianiu i atrakcyjności płci przeciwnej. Nadal jednak zdarzają mi się chwilowe zauroczenia, kiedy po obejrzeniu filmu zaczynam gorączkowo szukać kolejnych produkcji z tym samym aktorem w roli głównej, będących dziełem tego samego reżysera albo choćby nakręconych w tym samym czasie (nawet jeśli na filmwebie średnia ocen części z nich nie przekracza nawet sześciu punktów). Tak było z kryminałami lat sześćdziesiątych, Jakiem Gyllenhaalem, Seanem Connery, twórczością Scorsese, Villeneuve, czy Alana J. Pakuly.
Mniej więcej rok temu wybrałam się do kina na film „Kryptonim U.n.c.l.e." o dwóch szpiegach w czasach Zimnej wojny. Był lekki i przyjemny, a moją uwagę zwróciła przede wszystkim Alicia Vikander, która grała tam jedną z głównych ról. Spodobały mi się jej naturalny wdzięk, świeżość i dziewczęca uroda. Kilka miesięcy później, trochę z braku pomysłu na wieczór, obejrzałam film „Dziewczyna z portretu", którego głównym atutem była gra utalentowanej Szwedki. Jak się później okazało, nie tylko ja byłam tego zdania, bo nie minęło kilka tygodni, a ta rok młodsza ode mnie piękność została laureatką Oscara. Dziewczyna ma nosa do scenariuszy – pomyślałam sobie i postanowiłam obejrzeć inne produkcje z jej udziałem, licząc na to, że się nie zawiodę. Po „Testamencie młodości", „Ex Machine" i głośnym sprzed kilku laty „Kochanku królowej" (którego nie odnalazłam niestety w polskiej wersji językowej, a jedynie z angielskimi napisami, bo jest to produkcja duńska) stałam się prawdziwą fanką jej talentu.
Czekałam więc na kolejne filmy, tak jak dzieci czekają na pierwszy śnieg i co jakiś czas sprawdzałam czy wiadomo już coś więcej na temat jej poczynań. Zwiastun do filmu "Światło między oceanami" zobaczyłam więc prawdopodobnie jakieś dziesięć minut po tym, jak został opublikowany i od razu zadecydowałam, że wybiorę się do kina zaraz po premierze. Ba! Zrobię więcej! Przeczytam książkę, na podstawie której napisano scenariusz – trzeba się przecież dobrze przygotować i być rozeznanym w temacie. Po zapoznaniu się z krótkim opisem książki trochę się zniechęciłam, bo nie przepadam za melodramatami, a tu zapowiadało się naprawdę ckliwie. Przeczytało ją ponad dwa miliony osób więc musi być w niej coś fajnego – przekonywałam sama siebie i z udawanym entuzjazmem podreptałam do księgarni.

Tom Sherbourne, który wciąż nie może uporać się ze wspomnieniami z wielkiej wojny postanawia przyjąć posadę latarnika i wspólnie z ukochaną żoną rozpocząć nowy etap w życiu, z dala od domu i demonów przeszłości. Los wystawia ich jednak na ciężką próbę i stawia przed wyborem, który na zawsze zmieni ich życie. Historia pokazuje, jak trudno czasem odróżnić dobro od zła i jak niewiele trzeba, aby dobrzy ludzie podejmowali złe decyzje.
Tak jak wspominałam powyżej: nie lubię melodramatów, ale zupełnie nie przeszkadzało mi to wylać litra łez i lamentować pod nosem co dziesięć stron "jak on ją strasznie kocha!" albo "wybacz mu, wybacz mu, nie bądź głupia!" i zarywać noce, aby doczytać jeszcze tylko jeden rozdział… ewentualnie cztery. Reasumując, książkę naprawdę polecam, nie tylko fanom Alicii. A tych, którzy są ciekawi ekranizacji, zapraszam do kin już osiemnastego listopada.
